Comet channel has had some good movies on today. Trick or Treat (the 80s one with Ozzy) and the Exorcist III, which is the best one of them all imo, and one of the few movies that genuinely unsettles me. They used both silence and sound to create a dreadful feeling. No background music. I’ve noticed that movies that are relatively quiet with minimal or no music are the ones that scare me the most. Also, Brad Dourif is underrated and can be absolutely terrifying when he wants. I swear he scares the crap out of me in that movie. I do find it funny that in both The Exorcist III and the Childs Play series, he plays the part of an executed serial killer who then possesses another body. He even says “It’s child’s play” in the Exorcist III, which came out two years after the first Child’s Play lmao. It was like Doug Bradley calling someone “pinhead” in one of the Wrong Turn movies 😆 I love those subtle references.
Another director who is really good with sound is John Carpenter. The three movies in his “apocalypse trilogy” all have that minimal noise and not much, if any, background music, and they are all fucking creepy. Those movies are The Thing, Prince of Darkness, and The Mouth of Madness. All of them have this minimal, plodding, very scarce background noise. You’d have to have watched them to know what I mean by “plodding”. It’s hella creepy, and I guess it could be considered background music technically, but I think it’s more of a design. I don’t know if what I just wrote made sense at all 😅 Most people don’t know those were supposed to be a trilogy either. It makes sense if you watch them all in a row. Similar atmosphere, sounds, and all of them make you think the end of the world is nigh. Insanely good stuff.
I know some people would punch me in the face for saying one of the Exorcist sequels is better than the original but…I strongly believe it is, and I’m not even that big a fan of the first one! The second Exorcist movie was…awful. Terribad. I do not think anyone would punch me in the face for saying THAT. 😬
I think my weird stomach bug is starting to fade away, finally. I’ve felt mostly okay today. I probably shouldn’t have said that, I’m gonna jinx myself 😂 At least I feel a whole lot better than I did yesterday, both mentally and physically. Thankful for that. I was some kind of pissed off yesterday lol
I hope the Russian spam bots that read this enjoyed my movie ramblings haha. I wish I had someone to talk horror movies with. I could bore the hell out of them on why I (and it seems, a lot of other horror nerds) believe Hellraiser and Event Horizon take place in the same universe. 🧐
Edit: it’s almost 3am and I hear Day of the Dead on in there. 💚 Yeah, I keep the living room tv on at night for background noise lol. Silence is not golden 😅
Edit: oh my goodness https://thoughtcatalog.com/eric-redding/2016/01/44-people-share-their-crazy-and-dangerous-ambien-horror-stories/
I was prescribed Ambien in the early 2000s. The worst that happened to me was the walls in my room warping, bulging and changing colours (I ran to my parents bedroom and made mom sleep with me because I was scared 😭 please note I was probably 17 at the time, pitiful I know) and the posters on my wall silently “talking” to me. I would see the people in them moving and would slowly walk around from poster to poster and nod my head at whatever they were saying. Ambien is crazy. I quit taking it because sometimes it actually knocked me out before the hallucinations, but I would wake up 5 hours later tripping balls, which was actually pretty scary. I tried Lunesta after that, but it made it taste like I’d slept with a hobo’s foot in my mouth all night, and no amount of brushing, mouthwash or mints got rid of it. Never again on both of them, I’ll just be a night owl 😂
